the new phone book does not come out till Aug 2010. What are some good places to advertise a new business before then?

Before then, or anyway? The phone book isn’t the greatest way to advertise if you are serious about having a successful business. It relies very much on someone knowing your name & what you do, in addition to them thinking you are better than your competition.
You need to set up a website as a first step…you can even do this for free if money is an issue. Go to http://www.WordPress.com & they will host your website for free if you don’t need a particular domain name. If you want a specific domain name (ie. http://www.xxxxxxxxx.com) then you can buy that & assign it to your WordPress site for about $9/year.
It’s not difficult – I’m not a computer geek & am teaching myself about these things & was able to set up my own site only last week.

Then you can write articles & leave your webpage link for people who are interested. Additionally you can take a really simple video talking about your business on your digital camera, upload it onto YouTube & add a link to your website for more information.
Indeed, if your customers are happy with the service or products you supply, then ask if they would mind if you took a short video of them saying how pleased they are that they have done business with you & post that on YouTube.
You can advertise on Google with a pay per click (PPC) advert & you can limit how much you want to spend per day.
If you have a little more money, you can buy a software package called Lead Evolution that finds people on line that are looking for your service. Then after you have vetted the selection, you can write an email with a link to your site or some details of who you are & what your business is & with one click of a button, you can email them all.

I am a complete novice at this & so last week went on a 4 day seminar to learn how to market my business on the internet – it is the main medium with over $550 billion being spent on line last year. Even if you have nothing to sell on line & are advertising an off line business, people go on line for information so you need to have a presence on the web to point them to you.
The seminar was run by World Internet Summit & was such a valuable seminar to go to…I knew next to nothing & was a bit psyched out by the whole thing until I listened to these guys. I was so impressed that I have put a link up on my new site too
