Can I legally have a *subcontractor* represent my computer business with a phone number forwarded to his cell?

…or would that begin to classify him as an "employee"? I’d like to have subcontractors answer calls under my business name and perform the labor so that I am not a bottleneck and do not have to perform the role of sales and dispatch. Using call-forwarding, a business number would ring his phone directly.
However, I fear that this could begin to classify him as a "part time employee".

You fear in vain. Just remember, you are responsible for the work they do so if they mess up or steal something you are the one to get sued.
I think that would fall under the employee classification of duties – plus – if you never actually talk to the customer calling, how will you know the "subcontractor" will act on YOUR behalf instead of just doing the work and billing the customer himself and keeping all the money and not even telling you the job existed?
