No, with Ooma you need an internet connection but you don’t need a computer.
Magic Jack plugs into your computer. Everytime you want to make a call (or receive one) you have to turn your computer on. This might be OK if you make occassional long distance calls, but I can’t imagine it replacing a dedicated phone line.
By the way, I’ve been using Ooma for six months and I can’t believe I’m as happy with it as I am. It’s just like my old landline phone service-I pick up the phone and dial-simple as that, but I don’t pay anything for the calls. It has many other features, but my current favorite is that phone messages are sent to my email as an mp3 file. How cool is that.
