This is a complex situation and you will need to consult a lawyer in formulating plans on what to do. If you cannot afford a lawyer, contact Legal Aid and they will assist you. Good Luck in getting this "mess" straightened out. I feel your pain.
If you’re going to charge them, I suggest instead of coming online and asking here you go to a lawyer. Find one that doesn’t charge for initial consultation, and ask their opinion on it. I think the same thing as you, that it is slander and defamation of character, and since you were denied another job and unemployment because of what they said you should have a case.
