Hi, i just started studying software engineering and i was wondering how is Game developing as a career is it good, i really like regular business software development especially web aplications, but game development really catches my eye, how are they different? would you say game development is better, and i have better opportunities

I’m very disappoiinted about what has just happened to me. I’m a 10 year veteran Java J2EE Software Engineer – Architect and this IT staffing agency just screwed me over bigtime man. They contacted me with an interview so I took the interview and nailed it. I got the job offer from thier largest client and got the offer letter, relocation packet and everything. Passed the backgound check, drug check and online exams.

I asked them several times PLEASE MAKE SURE THIS IS A DONE DEAL BEFORE I GIVE MY NOTICE AT MY JOB. I can’t stress to you enough how many times I told them to check, double check and triple check that because there are not many jobs of my field in this area. They called me and assured me I could put in my notice so I did and so did my fiance.

This past weeked we made a 14hr road trip to this city we are moving to looking for housing. We stayed there 2 days incurring all kinds of expenses and put down a 75 deposit on a rental home. I get a call on yesterday and they tell me that the job offer has been retracted! What!!!! I asked why and they would not even tell me why. In the meantime myself and my fiance are out of jobs (can’t go back), spent all this money getting ready to move and have to move because since I am the breadwinner and there are no other Java Software Engineering jobs in this small city.

They won’t return my calls or respond to my emails. I asked to speak with upper management and guess what they said? Yep you guessed it. I AM THE MANAGER SO YOU HAVE TO TALK TO ME. I have a hardcopy of a job offer and a relocation packet. I don’t want to sue this company but they have ruined my current situation with no friggin explanation whatsoever.

We are not in a financial situation where we can make it through 30 days of both of us being unemployed.

What should I do?

<The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering is a book on software engineering and project management by Fred Brooks, whose central theme is that "adding manpower to a late software project makes it later". This idea is known as Brooks’s law, and is presented along with the second-system effect and advocacy of prototyping.

Brooks’s observations are based on his experiences at IBM while managing the development of OS/360. He had mistakenly added more workers to a project falling behind schedule. He also made the mistake of asserting that one project — writing an Algol compiler — would require six months, regardless of the number of workers involved (It required longer). The tendency for managers to repeat such errors in project development led Brooks to quip that his book is called "The Bible of Software Engineering", because, "everybody quotes it, some people read it, and a few people go by it."[1] The book is widely regarded as a classic on the human elements of software engineering.[2]

The work was first published in 1975 (ISBN 0-201-00650-2), reprinted with corrections in 1982, and republished as an anniversary edition with four extra chapters in 1995>

SO I REPLIED BACK & RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING:

Thank you for taking interest in our company. The JS Co. develops software and provides other services in IT field for clients in the United States. To satisfy their demand we hire programmers from all over the world who offer cheaper but qualified service. They work on the software all together for us so that we could provide the final product to our client.

We’d like to offer you a position of JS Co. Customer Service Manager, who is going to carry on correspondence with our clients, help us draw up internal and tax reports, arrange payments from clients to programmers via general money transfer systems.
Earlier we paid our programmers by ourselves. The client paid for the final product via international wire transfers and we distributed the payments to our employees via international money transfer systems. At the present economic conditions the system works less efficient as many banks have become unstable. To avoid delays we’ve developed another system of payments, which allows to save the time of our employees. Now the client makes a domestic wire transfer to a JS Co. Customer Service Manager (it takes around 3-4 hours to be fully processed). Our Customer Service Manager withdraws the funds and distributes it to our programmers via any method of instant transfer.

You work at home. First, you’ll have a two-week training during which we examine your skills and learning capability. That is why there is no need in special economic education to perform any services or financial operations. You do not buy anything or invest. You are paid fixed salary 3600 USD per month during training (as it is actually only 2 weeks, you get 1800USD). Bonus payments are possible. After the training you become our official Customer Service Manager and are paid 4200 USD.
We are looking for:
- Hard-working, determined, responsible employee;
- 21+;
- With advanced computer skills, phone available, Internet access;
- Having positive attitude and willing to learn;
- With outstanding organizational and problem-solving skills;

I have a bachelor’s in business management, but I am very interested in software engineering and computer science. Would I need to get another bachelor’s in computer science or software engineering or can I go straight to getting a masters in one of these disciplines? I know some schools are different then others, but is it likely that I don’t have to get another bachelor’s?
