What does it sound like when a company is recording a phone conversation with you?

Recently there was some company who called my house and this mean sounding guy on the other end. When I talked to him, I heard some beeps in the background – was this company recording my phone call? When a company is recording a call are they required to tell you that they are recording by law? I live in Pennsylvania if this information helps.
Ohio guy is stupid. Seriously.

you re being paranoid ! rest assured that if someone is recording you re conversations – you wouldn’t hear any beeping sounds in the back round. and yes you re employer has the right to record your calls
Its 2007……dont you think the technology exists to record your call without beeps……
They need to inform you that they are recording (or have the beeps as indicators).
If its done legally, the sound you hear will be them telling you this call may be recorded
