I personally recommend Nextiva or Packet8 for personal and small business VOIP. Both offer reasonable fees, and good quality VOIP services.
You will need a broadband connection, but generally your total fees even with an 800 number are included in a flat rate.
any regular phone account set us as a BUSINESS account is going to be infinitely more expensive than a residential line – you pretty much have to pay by the minute and with 800 #’s you pay by the minute for all INCOMING calls
magicjack required a broadband internet connection to work – not sure if – domestic long distance is free – I doubt you can connect an 800 # to it though
I would recommend using a service like Grasshopper, Virtual PBX or OneBox. These types of services are designed for small businesses and are relatively cheap (starting around $10 a month).
You can get an 800 number, a certain number of minutes and pretty cool features like call forwarding, custom greetings and voicemail extensions if you add employees. Plus you wouldn’t have to worry about long distance charges.
